Pool Party Invitations and Fun Water Games to Entertain

Kids in the Pool Party InvitationsA summer pool party is a blast for a birthday party or any special occasion.  Keeping kids entertained is easier when you can guide them in some fun pool games.

Octopus
Choose a person to be “it”. They stand in the middle of the pool. Players line up on one side of the pool and try and swim to the other side without being tagged. The players who are tagged hold hands with “it” and for the next round all the players holding hands try and tag the swimmers as they try and make it to the other end of the pool. Keep going until all players have been tagged – then choose another “it” and start again. Lots of fun!

Noodle Joust
Select two players to sit on a blow up raft in the middle of the pool. Give each one a pool noodle and have them joust with the noodles and try and get each other off the raft. The winner takes on the next player.

Plotting life expectancy against income for every country since 1810, Hans shows how the world we live in is radically different from the world most of us imagine.

How To Convincingly Show Your Kids Santa Came to Visit

Up the Chimney Christmas Invitations

Up the Chimney Christmas Invitations

The moment when children realize that Santa isn’t real is often a difficult one. Most of us remember with no small amount of embarrassment – but also a sense that that moment was when we lost our innocence.

Part of the magic of Christmas as a child is to look wonderingly at a Christmas Eve night, hoping and praying that Santa is going to visit and that you’re on the Good list. It’s an innocence and magic we wish to preserve in our children for as long as possible, and to that end, here’s a quick list of things to do to make Santa’s visit appear all the more convincing:

1. Take a bite out of the cookie!

It’s so simple, but so often forgotten. If your children leave food out for Santa, make sure you take a convincing bite. The same goes for any drinks left out – take a swig. Your kids will be delighted that Santa enjoyed their offering, and you’ll get something tasty too.

2. Leave icing sugar footprints.

All you need is a sieve and a white powder – icing sugar pre-mix is best for the job – and you’ve got the tools to make some convincing Santa footprints. Pour the powder into the sieve and sprinkle a route from the chimney to beneath the tree, just like Santa would walk in his snow-covered boots.

3. Sign a couple of gifts “From Santa”

A small touch but a nice one. While the majority of your gifts can say “from Mom and Dad”, add in a couple that are signed by the man himself.

Engagement Party Invitations and Traditions

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Wedding Engagement Party ToastTraditionally, the wedding engagement party was not a gift-giving occasion, as the news of the couple’s engagement was made by surprise announcement by the father of the bride to guests at a normal party.

Today, it varies from culture to culture if engagement presents are given at a party celebrating a previously announced engagement.

With news traveling at warp speed today, the engagement party is more a formal way of celebrating and congratulating the happy couple and can be an elaborate affair or a cozy gathering.

When did Wedding Announcements in Newpapers Start?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Invitation Wax SealIn the Middle Ages, families of means would have their wedding invitations hand-crafted by monks who were skilled in the art of Calligraphy.

The personal crest or Family Coat of Arms was stamped in hot wax to seal the document.

By 1600, the printing press which was invented in 1447, still produced a poor result for stylish wedding invitations.

It was around this time that it became tradition to announce weddings in the newspapers.

The First Wedding Invitations were Announced, Not Printed

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Medieval Wedding CoupleBefore the invention of the printing press in 1447 and because of widespread illiteracy, English weddings were typically announced by a Town Crier who would walk the streets announcing the news of the day in a loud voice.

If you heard the wedding announcement, you were then part of the celebration.
