The First Wedding Invitations were Announced, Not Printed

Before the invention of the printing press in 1447 and because of widespread illiteracy, English weddings were typically announced by a Town Crier who would walk the streets announcing the news of the day in a loud voice. 

If you heard the wedding announcement, you were then part of the celebration.
